CHARTRES
4th May 2018

CHARTRES COBBLES – MASSAGING MY KIDNEYS
We entered Chartres early that evening at the river end. Unknowingly, we had chosen the most difficult route to the Cathedral. It stands high above the town at the end of a long, steep, winding, cobbled hill. This ancient thoroughfare caused my scooter to judder alarmingly. It sent shivery thrills right through my body, starting at the soles of my feet. I hardly noticed that we were passing through the old medieval city…

CHARTRES CATHEDRAL – SMALLER THAN MOST – BUT BEAUTIFUL
However, we reached the top, and entered the cathedral. It was strangely empty compared to many.
CHARTRES’ FAMOUS ORGAN:

The famous organ, upon which Albert Schweitzer played many times, was very large. It seemed to have been plonked halfway up one of the extremely high pillars.

CHARTRES CATHEDRAL’S STAINED GLASS
There were a lot of beautiful stained glass windows; not least the rose window over the main door; most impressive was the circle of windows backing the altar, and fronting a large statue of a flying angel. The colours flooding in were spectacular.
CHARTRES CATHEDRAL – WE MISS THE MOSAIC FLOOR
I wished that the famous floor tiled in a prehistoric maze pattern had not been covered with chairs. It always strikes me as funny – and encouragingly subversive – how so much pre-Christian stuff seems to seep into cathedrals. (The Green Man is hidden in both Winchester and Canterbury cathedrals back home).
CHARTRES – A PARADE GROUND ATOP THE CITY
We emerged to explore views seen from the ‘parade ground’ of a seminary or suchlike, next to the cathedral. Then it was time to start looking for food.

CHARTRES – AUTHENTIC LOCAL FOOD NO DEARER THAN ‘FAST-FOOD’

I’d already spotted a board with authentic local dishes standing outside an old house right opposite the ‘back door’ of the cathedral. Graham had demurred, thinking it too expensive, and set off to explore ‘that road with all the restaurants’. I let him go, knowing that he would find ‘chips with everything’ at exactly the same prices as asked here.
After a bit I went to meet him, and he had to agree that I’d spotted the better place. And so it proved.
CHARTRES – HAUTE-GOURMET MEAL – AFFORDABLE PRICE

The very welcoming host ushered us into a room with very old wood panelling. It held only four or five tables, two of which were already occupied. The menu had three choices of entrée, and similar of Plat de Jour and dessert. There was a wine list, and the owner-chef suggested we try a local wine with our meal; and indeed, his choice proved very good with the exquisite gourmet food, which we enjoyed along with conversation from our fellow-diners, who all spoke English.
Le Cloitre Gourmand Restaurant: 21 Cloître Notre Dame, 28000 Chartres, France
CHARTRES CATHEDRAL – A LIGHT SHOW

The icing on the cake was when our host diverted our attention to the window, where the entrance to the cathedral was displaying a light show; painting the saints in their robes with shifting blocks of colour. He was clever. Soon he was able to close up when his clientele all paid up and moved en bloc just outside. The recent diners mingled with school children who had been brought to view the show. After a while, Graham walked down alone to the car, left by the river, to drive it up the ‘easy’ way – right behind where we had just dined…
We both want to return to Chartres.

You have truly captured the essence of Chartres, Jackie. Beautiful photos! It’s been many years since we were last there, and it’s always a joy to see it again. Too bad that you couldn’t see the floor. So glad that the meal turned out to be delicious! Wishing you and Graham a New Year filled with joy, peace, good health … and a little more travel. 🙂 ~Terri

Hi, I do think your site may be having web browser compatibility problems.
When I look at your website in Safari, it looks fine but when opening in I.E., it’s got some overlapping issues.
I merely wanted to give you a quick heads up! Other than that, fantastic site!
January 17, 2021 @ 11:38 am
You sent us two comments. One – about setting up a site. One has to pay for a ‘Domain’ but it is not expensive -after that free. Apparently there is a way to send blogs for free – but we don’t know how. Sorry.
Yes – there ARE overlaps – when we revisited somewhere worth a second mention or stayed again with rexceptionally friendly hosts who give extra-good value for money; five come to mind; also two or three great places to eat… That is so that they are not missed by people planning to go to those places – and to help hosts who have become friends… So glad you like our posts.

I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own weblog and was wondering what all is required to get setup?
I’m assuming having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny?
I’m not very internet smart so I’m not 100% sure.
Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Appreciate it
January 12, 2021 @ 7:14 am

hackers? My last blog (wordpress) was hacked and
I ended up losing a few months of hard work due to no back up.
Do you have any solutions to prevent hackers?
January 12, 2021 @ 7:46 am

An interesting discussion is worth comment. I do think that you need to publish more on this subject matter, it
might not be a taboo matter but typically people don’t discuss these subjects.
To the next! Kind regards!!
January 17, 2021 @ 11:30 am
Thank you for your kind advice. Actually, there are twenty-six or more entries on our website, covering a three-month tour of France and Italy, driving all the way from Liverpool to the far side of sicily – using country roads, and bed and breakfast, mostly in private homes. Now I am writing of France in 2018 – mostly new places. But there are many, many more travel blogs by other people. I am mystified about ‘a taboo matter’. What did you find ‘Taboo’?
Jackie Usher.
January 12, 2021 @ 9:29 am

My programmer is trying to convince me to move to .net from PHP.
I have always disliked the idea because of the costs. But he’s tryiong none the less.
I’ve been using WordPress on various websites for about a year and
am worried about switching to another platform. I have heard good things about blogengine.net.
Is there a way I can transfer all my wordpress posts
into it? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
January 24, 2021 @ 1:45 pm
Sorry, can’t help you there, I’m not an expert. Good luck Graham
January 22, 2021 @ 8:14 am
Aw, this was a really good post. Taking a few minutes and actual effort to make a very good article… but what can I say… I procrastinate a whole lot and never manage to get anything done.
January 23, 2021 @ 2:28 pm
I know the feeling… I am fighting a different procrastination right now. Suggest you ask yourself if you really wantto embark on writing your article. If you do, just try putting a few words down, then a few more… You can always edit later.

Hi Bernie? Thanks, glad you like it. I learnt how to construct it through a youtube site. Hogan Chua has a very successful youtube channel with a great many followers and many tutorial videos under his belt. Last week I had a problem with ours and contacted him after 2 years and within a couple of days he had looked at our site and sorted the problem and as of this moment he has not mentioned any charge. Here is a link to the video that I used to start our website and blog. Do mention that we refered you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JWgv0nTOEg. You will get a lot advise from Hogan but one thing I will express is try and get interesting photos especially your own and as many as possible and the better the quality as possible. If you are a photographer I need say no more, If you are not, invest in at least a good point and shoot and learn how to use it and how to process your images. You can always get back to me about that if you like. When we first started all I had was a cheap point and shoot and no knowledge of processing apart from simple stuff. Good Luck, take care and stay safe. Graham
